Since my big move from Dubai to Zurich, I’ve found myself constantly comparing work-life in these two vibrant cities. Having had the incredible opportunity to live and work in both, I’ve noticed some interesting contrasts, especially when it comes to after-work social interaction.
Dubai: The All-Encompassing After-Work Scene
Dubai’s work culture thrives on a strong sense of community within the workplace. People are more invested in the social space, and it’s not uncommon to see colleagues gather for extended periods after work – sometimes stretching to two hours! This vibrant social scene is partly fueled by the city’s design. Entertainment is around every corner, making it easy to send a quick message on Slack and organize an impromptu gathering at a trendy spot like the Dubai Media One Hotel. Suddenly, you find yourself networking with colleagues you never even spoke to before work!

Zurich: The Structured Approach to Socializing
In Zurich, the approach to after-work socializing is a bit more structured. Here, the company often takes the initiative, organizing apéros (informal gatherings with drinks and snacks) after work. While these events are a great opportunity to connect, I’ve noticed a strong emphasis on punctuality. People tend to arrive on time and leave at a specific hour, eager to head home.

Transportation Shapes the Culture
After four years in Switzerland, I believe this difference stems largely from transportation options. Dubai’s notorious traffic jams incentivize people to spend extra time at work, catching up on tasks or socializing with colleagues. In Zurich, with its excellent public transportation system, everyone relies on buses and trains, which run like clockwork (think Swiss punctuality!). There’s less need to linger at the office since you can efficiently travel home at the end of the workday.
A Personal Perspective
It’s important to remember that these are just my observations based on personal experiences. There will always be exceptions, and my views might not encompass every aspect of work-life in both cities. However, I believe these contrasting styles offer a fascinating glimpse into the unique cultures of Dubai and Zurich.pen_spark
